The Hardened Heart

Over the years, many seeds were planted and watered within the soil of our hearts. Some of the seeds produced good fruit, some produced bad fruit. The bad fruit ushered in character traits that were not attractive. If these traits are left unchecked and are not confessed to God, they build up. These bad traits can manifest in our lives and cause problems. What was initially a foothold is now a monster of a stronghold. The pain of divorce, loss, betrayal, abuse, failure, disappointment, and abandonment were never healed or dealt with. Waiting on the Lord to answer your most sincere prayers has left you angry, weary and impatient. Your heart has become hardened.

Matthew 13:15 NIV For the people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.

Voids are now filled with something or someone that seem to ease the pain. Your focus is no longer as clear and things that should bother you no longer do. When we do not guard our heart, the wrong things get in and contaminate it. This contamination deteriorates our spirit and makes us grow apart from God.

Proverbs 4:23 NIV Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Unwelcome guests use our hardened hearts to set up a permanent residence deep within us. This is why we should guard our hearts. The symptoms that radiate from a calloused heart are anything but the fruit of the spirit. People we spend time with, words we say, choices we make, music we listen to, television shows we watch, and what we do with our money and time are indicators of where our heart is. Do you know where your heart is? I urge you to guard your hearts and spend some time reflecting.

Through your decisions and lifestyle choices, the heart will grow more powerful in love and reverence to God, or it will become lost and buried under tons of sin. Once you get used to doing things that do not line up with the Word you step further away from God each time. Growing apart from God means that you no longer acknowledge what He says. Yes, you may still attend church, but your heart is so hard that the Word won’t penetrate.

We then fit in with the rest of the world. When others see us they do not see a reflection of Jesus. They do not see the radiating grace or anointing that Jesus places over us. Others  then say to themselves, “I don’t want to know her God—her life is no different than mine. We attend church, sing songs of praise, and read the word, but still there’s no visible power from the Holy Spirit.

Many have received the free gift of going to heaven through salvation and will not contribute anything in return to the kingdom. In the workplace, we blend in with everyone else. We tattoo crosses on our body and invest in the diamond crosses for our platinum necklaces. This is to show the world who we represent. Sadly a hard heart is buried beneath the lavish and inked exterior. We must represent God through our actions, and the good deeds of our hearts.

Jeremiah 17:9 NIV The heart is deceitful above all things. And beyond cure who can understand it

The condition of the heart is something that must be addressed if you want to grow in your spirituality. If not, you are saying that it okay for the enemy and his army to reign freely in your heart. I know this is not what you are saying. I believe you want to be better, right? The enemy has walked right into your heart and taken it hostage. He has you dancing by the beat of his drum. The good news is that you don’t have to allow the enemy to do this!

You know that we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus. It may seem that the enemy has won the war with your heart. The enemy has not won though! You know he is already defeated no matter how it looks. The enemy has us calling our sin little sin. But the so called little things are what turn into big things. God is not pleased with sin, but you don’t want to give up sinning. This is the epitome of a hard heart. In God’s eyes sin is sin and He hates them all.

We have authority over the enemy. If you have given your strength to the enemy, take it back from him. Regain your strength and renew yourself in the Lord. Define your purpose. Fresh oil is available to make us new. God is near if we call on him and seek Him with every fiber of our being. It should not be okay to barely get by with the royal bloodline that we bear. We are more than that! Please stop denying the work of the Holy Spirit while allowing evil to reign supreme in your life. That is unacceptable! God is able to do anything, and that includes the restoration of your heart.

God sees all and knows the condition of your heart–especially what you cannot see. Keep it clean before him. Ask the Lord to show you how to love Him with all of your heart.  Refuse to continue living in a way that does not glorify or worship who He is. Ask the Lord to search your heart and reveal it to you. Whatever He reveals to you repent of it quickly.

We cannot have intimacy without letting God in. He wants all of you! He cannot do work through a hard, controlling, rebellious, unrepentant, unforgiving or prideful heart. The oil in a car has to be changed by draining the dirty oil first, and then it is replaced with new oil. If new oil is constantly poured on top of the old oil, the engine will eventually blow out or stop working. This heart of the vehicle also messes up the other working parts of the car. Your heart is the same way with God. He is love and His love needs to be able to flow through. I know you desire better for yourself, so let’s start today.

  2. Wow this is saying so much. The examples used were good and easy to understand I know I got some issues I need to deal with as well. Sometimes I try to deal with them and it seems like it be so hard and then i want to give up. I will keep reading your stuff because it helps thanks.

  3. Great message, women and all people in general need to hear more of this. We are all so corrupted by something in this world that is bad for us. Evil and pain is all around us all the time. We all want things that society forces us to endulge to the point where it consumes us and we get lost. (money , love) Too many of us dont practice to become obsessed with the spiritual side of life. Were all competing in an intimidating world, so we misjudge. Sometimes we worship the wrong things.

We need more of this kind of talk for our children. We need to remember god and get passionate about it or you wont find peace.

Great article keep me in the loop.

  4. This topic addresses a lot of what we as women go through and whether we decide to move forward toward tomorrow vs. staying in our pain of yesterday. This is a great devotional for anyone to read and learn from. I love God and how he makes it easier for us if we would stay focused on him in our storms. Like mentioned above, if we keep our hearts turned to him, everything gets taken care of in due time!

  5. I woke up this morning with an odd feeling of dispairity. This article came right on time and helped give me a revised view. I needed this keep on sharing the Word with the World. We all need it. Loved this! HE is using you a vessal & Im glad you branched in my direction. God Bless

  6. Sometimes we don’t look at things from this angle and you showing us how to think outside the box and giving us great insight into the word of God!!! Thanks a bundle for the message and keep up the good work!

  7. Ladies, I appreciate each of you taking the time to comment on this post. I know your lives are quite hectic but you decided to share your time with the ministry reading my devotional. I write as God leads me and the issue of the heart is really deep. We all get off track and I had to read this devotional a few times myself the other day, and repent of some things in which I allowed to get in the way.

  8. This devotional speaks to me on so many levels, and I am guilty of allowing myself to compromise. As Christians we allow the little seed to take root in the soil of our hearts and before we know it the little seed has grown into a mature tree. Lately my prayer has been “create in me a clean heart”. I am asking my Father to show me not only the little seeds but also the big trees that that need to be felled in my life. It is a big pill to swallow when He begins to reveal to us the content of our hearts but I am glad that when we ask for our Father’s help with any issue His solutions are never harsh but loving.

  9. Great subject. I love the way that it is written so it can be understood by many. God knows our hearts and I thank Him for that. Keep it up, LaTanya!!
